So you want to work at home, do you? It might seem the ideal situation, to spend your days in the comfort of your own home, dictating how and when you work, but there is a lot more involved than you might think. There is the potential for great success in a work from home business, but there is also the chance that you will fall flat on your face. Here are 5 ways not to fail in a work at home business.

1 – Remember that you are working. It can be tempting to get drawn away by other things in your home. The floors may need to be vacuumed. The laundry may need to be put away. Dr. Phil might be on TV. Just because you are home, doesn’t mean that it is a day off. Remain focused on work during work time.

2 – Set up a work space. You should never bring your work home with you, even when you work from home. Make sure that you have a clearly defined and separate area of your home that you make your “office”. Don’t play in your office, and don’t work in the rest of your home if you can help it.

3 – Call it a day! Just because working from home allows you to not have to leave your home, does not mean that you should always be working when you are at home. Set yourself business hours and work during those. The rest of the time should be either family or personal time. If you don’t give yourself that time off then you haven’t gained anything by working at home.

4 – Get help. If you have small children, it can be very hard for them to see mommy or daddy at home and understand that you cannot always play with them. Send them to daycare, hire a nanny or schedule a play date for them elsewhere. You need to be able to give your work your attention when you are working and your kids your attention when you are not, so get help to make that happen.

5 – Don’t give up. It may take a while for your work at home business to truly take off and it can be easy to run scared back to a regular 9 to 5 job. Give yourself time and don’t be afraid to try. You will never succeed if you stop trying.
